AsEuropebecameChristianised，thepaganholidayslosttheirreligiouscharacterandMayDaychangedintoapopularsecularcelebration.AsignificantcelebrationofMayDayoccursinGermanywhereitisoneofseveraldaysonwhichSt.Walburga，creditedwithbringingChristianitytoGermany，iscelebrated.ThesecularversionsofMayDay，observedinEuropeandAmerica，maybebestknownfortheirtraditionsofdancingaroundthemaypoleandcrowningtheQueenofMay.Fadinginpopularitysincethelate20thcenturyisthegivingof＂Maybaskets，＂smallbasketsofsweetsorflowers，usuallyleftanonymouslyonneighbours＇doorsteps.
Sincethe18thcentury，manyRomanCatholicshaveobservedMay–andMayDay–withvariousMaydevotionstotheBlessedVirginMary.Inworksofart，schoolskits，andsoforth，Mary＇sheadwilloftenbeadornedwithflowersinaMaycrowning.May1isalsooneoftwofeastdaysoftheCatholicpatronsaintofworkersStJosephtheWorker，acarpenter，hu***andtoMotherMary，andsurrogatefatherofJesus.ReplacinganotherfeasttoSt.Joseph，thisdatewaschosenbyPopePiusXIIin1955asacounterpointtothecommunistInternationalWorkersDaycelebrationsonMayDay.
