1、用法不同except后面的宾语是被排除在外的。

例句：All the students took part in the sports meeting except Tim.除Tim以外，其他同学都参加了运动会。except for后面跟的宾语往往和主语不是同一类事物。例句：All the buildings are great except for their location.除了位置以外，所有的建筑都相当不错。

2、地位不同except 能被 except for替换，而except for 不能被 except 替换。例句：I had nothing on except (for) my socks.我除了短袜什么都没穿。

3、特征不同except for 具备两个 except没有的特征：except for 后的名词引述相反的意思，从而修正主句；且句中无相称同类词。例句：Except for the ticking of the clock, his house was silent.除了时钟的滴答声，他的家中静悄悄的。
