　　UniversityofMalaya,orUM,Malaysia'soldestuniversity,issituatedona922acre(373.12hectare)campusinthesouthwestofKualaLumpur,thecapitalofMalaysia.Itwasfoundedon28September1905inSingaporeastheKingEdwardVIICollegeofMedicineandon8thOctober1949,itbecametheUniversityofMalayawiththemergeroftheKingEdwardVIICollegeofMedicineandRafflesCollege(foundedin1928).TheUniversityofMalayaderivesitsnamefromtheterm'Malaya'asthecountrywasthenknown.TheCarr-SaundersCommissiononUniversityEducationinMalaya,whichrecommendedthesettingupoftheuniversity,notedinitsReportin1948:TheUniversityofMalayawouldprovideforthefirsttimeacommoncentrewherevarietiesofrace,religionandeconomicinterestcouldmingleinjointendeavour...ForaUniversityofMalayamustinevitablyrealisethatitisauniversityforMalaya.ThegrowthoftheUniversitywasveryrapidduringthefirstdecadeofitsestablishmentandthisresultedinthesettingupoftwoautonomousDivisionson15January1959,onelocatedinSingaporeandtheotherinKualaLumpur.In1960,thegovernmentofthetwoterritoriesindicatedtheirdesiretochangethestatusoftheDivisionsintothatofanationaluniversity.Legislationwaspassedin1961andtheUniversityofMalayawasestablishedon1stJanuary1962.OnJune16th1962,UniversityofMalayacelebratedtheinstallationofitsfirstChancellor,TunkuAbdulRahmanPutraAl-Haj,whowasalsothecountry'sfirstprimeminister.ThefirstVice-ChancellorwasProfessorOppenheim,aworld-renownedMathematician.Currently,HisRoyalHighnessTheSultanofPerakDarulRidzuan,SultanNazrinMuizzuddinShahistheChancelloroftheUniversityofMalaya.ProfessorDato'Dr.MohdAminJalaludinwasappointedastheeleventhVice-ChancellorofUniversityofMalayaon8thNovember2013.
